Moist and Chewy Banana Bread

2 to 3 very ripe bananas
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 eggs
3 tablespoons buttermilk
Pinch of salt
1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
2 cups all-purpose flour

Cream together shortening and sugar. Add eggs and bananas. Mix and add the dry ingredients, alternating with the milk. Place the mixture into a well-greased loaf pan and bake at 350 degrees F for approximately 50 minutes.
